The Most Common Washbasin Materials
ceramic and stone resin washbasins
While choosing bathroom fixtures is subjective, understanding the distinctive features of ceramic and solid resin basins will help you make an informed decision before you purchase them.
Ceramic Washbasins:
Ceramic washbasins are a timeless classic. Whether you prefer traditional elegance or modern designs, a ceramic washbasin always radiates quality. Ceramic is crafted from natural materials such as quartz, porcelain clay, kaolin, silicate minerals, and feldspar. No harmful or environmentally damaging substances are used in its production.
Production Process: The ceramic mixture is simply moulded, glazed, and fired at a high temperature (around 1,200 degrees Celsius). This process results in a durable, smooth surface that resists scratches and is easy to clean.
Advantages:
Durability:With proper care, ceramic washbasins maintain their appearance for many years.
Scratch Resistance:The smooth surface is resistant to scratches.
Easy to Clean: Common cleaning products won’t damage the material.
Sanitary ceramic is heat-resistant and doesn’t fade in the light.
Variety: Ceramic washbasins come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Disadvantages:
Weight: Ceramic washbasins are quite heavy.
Fragility: They can splinter if a heavy object falls on an edge.
Stone resin washbasins:
The stone resin is made of stone particles, acrylic resin, pigments, and marble dust to create a non-porous material that can be cast into various shapes. The resulting mixture is then capped with acrylic or other coatings to ensure that the surface and core are protected and scratch-resistant. Resin is also a slightly lighter material than ceramic, meaning it adds less load to wall-hung units.
Advantages:
Durability: Stone resin basins are known for their robustness and longevity.
Modern Aesthetic: Their sleek design adds a touch of contemporary elegance to your bathroom.
Disadvantages:Some low-quality stone resin wash basins that are on the market can turn yellow, bleed colour, or crack.
cratch Sensitivity:Stone resin basins can be susceptible to surface scratches if not handled carefully. Abrasive cleaning materials or sharp objects may leave marks on the basin. But if any scratches occur, you can have it sanded and polished and have your basin look brand new again.
Limited heat resistance: Though stone resin retains warmth, it is not as heat-resistant as natural stone. Extremely hot water or heated styling tools may cause damage over time.
Stain Susceptibility: Stone resin basins are generally non-porous, but they can still absorb certain substances. Coloured liquids, such as hair dye or strong chemicals, may stain the surface. Never use harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia directly on your basin, as they can harm the composite material.
